Conversely, teachers must not directly supervise any student with whom they have a sexual relationship. Undergraduate students are particularly vulnerable to the unequal institutional power inherent in the teacher-student relationship and the potential for coercion, because of their age and relative lack of maturity. Therefore, no teacher shall have a sexual or amorous relationship with any undergraduate student, regardless of whether the teacher currently exercises or expects to have any pedagogical or supervisory responsibilities over that student.
Teachers or students with questions about this policy are advised to consult with the University Title IX Coordinator, the Title IX coordinator of their school, the department chair, the appropriate dean, the Provost, or one of their designees. Students or other members of the community may lodge a complaint regarding an alleged violation of this policy with the University Title IX Coordinator, with the Title IX coordinator of their school, or with the University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct.

R omantic relationships between university professors and their students are becoming less and less acceptable. Many of the new university policies that have emerged in the last few years have focused on undergraduates and how to better protect them, typically with a campus-wide ban on staff dating undergrads. But a number of universities also demand that faculty members do not start relationships with graduate students they supervise.
This month, Princeton University went further and declared that faculty members were no longer allowed to date any graduate student—even if the couple works in different departments. Pre-existing relationships are exempt from the new rule. The university is encouraging greater collaboration across departments, Burdine says, which extends the concerns about unequal power between a professor and a student beyond the immediate supervisory relationship.
Princeton is the first university to take the campus-wide step but others will follow, says Jamelle Sharpe , who works at the University of Illinois College of Law in Urbana-Champaign and has surveyed academic policies in this area. Everywhere I go on campus, whether it be the Hop, Collis, Foco or any academic building, all I see are undergrads who appear to be the same age as I am. Most undergrads I know at Dartmouth see grad students as an undiscovered mystery: Where do they live? Where do they eat? Where do they spend their weekends in Hanover if not at the frats I kid, but do I really?
One of the first things I asked every graduate student I spoke with was: Why Hanover? According to the census, only about Bhargava Thyagarajan, a Ph. Thyagarajan said that what especially piqued his interest after growing up in India was the beautiful four-season experience Hanover offers, which was completely different from what he had been accustomed to his whole life. Unlike Thyagarajan, Mo Zhu, a master of engineering management student at The Thayer School of Engineering, chose Dartmouth for the parallels he drew to his undergraduate lifestyle.
Following his four years at Williams College, Zhu decided he preferred schools located in small, rural towns such as Hanover. Zhu also mentioned that some MEM students occasionally meet on the weekends, playing board games and spending time together in the MEM-specific area within Thayer. He, too, felt that much of life as a grad student is very individualized, with few all-campus interactions happening outside of special college-sponsored events.
While Thyagarajan, Zhu and Bratches all received their undergraduate degrees from other institutions, another grad student, Syed Rakin Ahmed, had quite a different experience. However great their love for the College might be, agreeing to spend eight years in Hanover is a big decision for any Dartmouth student.
