It’s not just Hollywood, politics and media where allegations of sexual misconduct are pouring in. Women in academia are sharing in the MeToo moment, opening up about the high-ranking professors they say abused their trust and violated their bodies when they were graduate students. Advocates fighting to prevent sexual violence and harassment on college campuses say cases allegedly involving professors who taught at Stanford University and UC Berkeley point to a culture in graduate schools where powerful professors are protected and allowed to act with near impunity at the expense of the students who depend on them for advice, guidance and the recommendations they needed to advance their education and careers.

These relations are fraught because of differences in power and experience, because they can involve serious conflicts of interest and because they can have disruptive effects on the functioning of and climate within our professional workplaces. Graduate school provides a transition between young adulthood and full professional stature, and graduate students mature enormously over the course of their studies. Before graduating they may participate in many of the professional functions of faculty, including undergraduate teaching, training and supervising new graduate and undergraduate students, evaluating students and writing recommendation letters, managing collaborations, and writing and reviewing manuscripts and proposals.
This is especially true in large research groups, where an overworked and distracted professor may be at the apex of a complex hierarchy of students and postdoctoral associates. Despite this professional trajectory, when it comes to romantic and sexual relations, for graduate students the current unwritten policy is: anything goes.

Can the Graduate School comment on romantic/sexual relationships between faculty and students?
There are certainly some thorny issues around consent in such relationships with imbalanced power dynamics, and I am interested to see where the GPSA and the Faculty Senate take these concerns. Does the Graduate School have any comment on this issue, as it pertains to not only the health and safety of graduate students, but also the academic standing of graduate students both those involved in such relationships and not and the standing of the Cornell Graduate School as a whole?
Do you have any thoughts on this practice, or on how to change a culture that has apparently led to such behavior? The debate ongoing in the GPSA includes multiple perspectives and voices, reflecting the complexity of this issue.

Former Grad Students: Our Professors Raped Us
My dating life for the past seven years has been a series of starts and stops, misunderstandings and miscommunications, and unrequited loves galore. If I fall, when I fall, I fall hard and am essentially inconsolable until I completely move on, which, to the chagrin of my inner circle, could be years. I honestly still cringe at the number of hours I spent crying over the dude I was in love with the last half of college.

One thought that has repeatedly struck me is how much easier graduate school might have been if somehow, magically, some of the things I knew when I turned in my dissertation I could have known when I first entered graduate school.
Instead, I had to learn those the hard way. Of course, for many topics this is impossible: the point of graduate school is to learn those by going through the experience.

Academia is rife with examples of destructive and hostile behaviour among professors who hold power over others. Not a week goes by without a newspaper report of a well-known university professor who is a serial sexual harasser. Every graduate student has a story of at least one professor who has behaved in a way that can be considered manipulative, angry, insulting, demeaning, degrading, vengeful, and otherwise taking advantage of humans with little power.
PhDs: the tortuous truth
R omantic relationships between university professors and their students are becoming less and less acceptable. Many of the new university policies that have emerged in the last few years have focused on undergraduates and how to better protect them, typically with a campus-wide ban on staff dating undergrads. But a number of universities also demand that faculty members do not start relationships with graduate students they supervise.
This month, Princeton University went further and declared that faculty members were no longer allowed to date any graduate student—even if the couple works in different departments. Pre-existing relationships are exempt from the new rule.
Graduation Date: International graduate students who are graduating must separate from all on-campus employment as of the date of graduation for the respective.
A recent Harvard study concluded that graduate students are over three times more likely than the average American to experience mental health disorders and depression. The study, which surveyed over economics students from eight elite universities, also concluded that one in 10 students experienced suicidal thoughts over a two-week period, a result consistent with other recent reports. While these findings are alarming to some, as a current graduate student myself, I regard them as hardly surprising.
But to understand the struggles graduate students face, you have to understand the structure of graduate school itself. Most people probably lump doctoral students into the same category as undergrads or students in professional schools such as law or medicine. The reality is their lifestyle and the nature of their work are fundamentally different. In the STEM fields where I have personal experience, as well as many other fields, graduate students are really hardly students at all.
Instead they are dedicating often over 60 hours a week towards performing cutting-edge research and writing journal articles that will be used to garner millions of dollars in university research funding. Further, unlike many professional school students, doctoral students do not leave their program with job security or even optimistic financial prospects.
